Schools urged to sign up for this year’s Big Walk and Wheel challenge

Schools are being encouraged to sign up for The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023. The walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school challenge runs from Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 31.

This challenge aims to inspire pupils to get active on their journeys to school while also improving air quality in their neighbourhood.

Open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK, the challenge is free to take part in and there are daily prizes to be won. Registering only takes a couple of minutes and there are lots of resources, including curriculum-linked lesson plans, to guide teachers along the way.

Dr Cecilia Oram, Head of Behaviour Change at Sustrans, said: “It’s no secret that walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting to and from school is fantastic for children’s health and wellbeing. An active commute also means less traffic and pollution, making the streets around schools safer for pupils, families and staff.

“By encouraging more young people to make active journeys, schools can instil lifelong habits that lead to happier, healthier communities. Plus, there are lots of exciting prizes on offer. So, get involved by heading to the Big Walk and Wheel website and download free resources to help you get started.”

On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest proportion of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school. A school’s best five days will determine their final position and schools at the top of their leaderboards will receive an exclusive Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel certificate.

Free resources are available to encourage pupils to help reduce air pollution and learn about the benefits of active travel for themselves, their school, their neighbourhood, and the whole planet.
