Job Description

Our workshop keeps the Roots team very busy with repairs, services, warranty, new bike builds, custom builds, wheel builds and more. As Bicycle Mechanic, you will contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the workshop in the following ways:

Main responsibilities:

  • Carry out bicycle services and repairs.
  • Build new bicycles to the Roots new build standard.
  • Assess bicycles and identify problems / parts for repair. Offer effective solutions to mechanical issues.
  • Service e-bikes and update e-bike software (training will be provided).
  • Source and order parts for bicycles and sundries for the workshop.
  • Keep the workshop organised, tidy and clean (as clean as possible).
  • Communicate clearly with customers about their booking, the condition of their bike(s) and the work that is required. Honest and open communication around timescales and cost of repairs/services.
  • Handover of serviced bicycles to customers, including a demonstration of the fully working bike and a description of the work carried out along with any advice on how to care for the bike or what work may need done next.
  • Use of the Trek Ascend till and stock system (training provided).
  • Answering the telephone and effectively communicating with the rest of the Roots team to ensure customer’s needs are met and that all enquiries are answered in a friendly, timely manner.
  • General maintenance of stock and shop floor.
  • Communicate to customers about other Roots services that may be of value to them i.e. bike fitting.
  • Supporting other Roots team members with tasks as and when required.
  • Any other adhoc duties.

Roots is growing, so there may be an opportunity to grow this role over time and supervise additional mechanics and staff.

Skills/Experience Required

Skills and experience:

  • Experience of working as a bicycle mechanic, preferably Cytech or Velotech trained.
  • Knowledge of the bike trade, distributors and suppliers.
  • Experience in sourcing bike parts online.
  • Experienced in servicing and repairing a wide variety of bicycle makes and models.
  • The initiative to work independently but also the ability to stop and ask for help or advice when required.
  • Experience in supervising others would be a beneficial.
  • Experience in managing a busy schedule and balancing this with walk-in customers.
  • Experience in handling a wide range of retail situations.
  • Knowledge of Trek and Marin bikes would be a bonus
