2019 launch to get more Londoners cycling

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News , Outdoor News

The Mayor wants to see an increase in the proportion of people walking, cycling and taking public transport to 80% of journeys by 2041, from 63% now.

TfL and the Mayor of London are working closely to create a unified London-wide cycle network that spans across the entirety of London. This cycling network will be run alongside the larger vision to address poor air quality and congestion, while improving the infrastructure of London boroughs making cycling easier, safer and more accessible.

TfL announced its intention to start work on the cycle route in south east London next summer, subject to final approvals.

This route will be crucial in the larger, wide scale plan to eliminate all death and serious injury from London's roads by 2041, reducing the danger to vulnerable road users and also improve pedestrian facilities and public spaces between Tower Bridge and Greenwich.

In 2019, TfL will use a single brand for all cycle routes, merging the two existing Cycle Superhighway and Quietway brands into a single system. This will bring two-way segregated cycle tracks on Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, Evelyn Street and Creek Road, five new pedestrian crossings and upgrades to more than 20 pedestrian crossings.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said:

"I'm delighted to be announcing some of the major new work that will start on cycle routes across London next year, and in introducing new quality standards for cycle routes, I'm determined to ensure every Londoner feels comfortable and safe getting on a bike, whatever their age, experience or background."
