Cycles sales on the up again?

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News

Bike Europe claims that the summer of 2018 has contributed greatly to the soaring sales.

Bike Europe has reported that the Nordic countries and the Netherlands have had skyrocketing e-bike sales while there has been a monumental double-digit growth in Germany.

E-bike sales in Sweden are up by 53% with help from the government's subsidy on the purchase of an electric bicycle. This is pushing e-bikes sales to over 100,000 units this year. In Denmark, sales are predicted to pass the 40,000 units mark, while in Finland a doubling in e-bikes is reported. These strong figures across Europe speak to the great summer of 2018 and the markets in the Netherlands and Germany.

Dynamo Retail Group released a recent survey involving 286 Dutch stores which revealed results with regards to sales in the 2018 season. The ten months from January in 2018 had a 12.8% in total turnover, on average per store. The sales of e-bikes and city e-bikes in particular was said to have boosted the turnover, which grew by 37.7%. e-MTBs also demonstrated a strong growth in the first ten months with 45.8%. The sale of regular city bikes increased by 7.1%, with roadrace bikes climbing to 20%.

Germany probably has seen the biggest e-bike market growth taking the market in stride. Data from the industry association Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV) outlined that the sale of electric bikes increased by a total of 19%, resulting in a total sale of 720,000 e-bikes. ZIV reported in 2018 that the first half of the year saw a growth of 19% pushing e-bike sales to over 850,000 units. ZIV has forecasted that in 2019, Germany will see the one million units mark being passed.

Bike Europe's insight report into bike sales and the bicycle market have not considered the UK's bike market. What are your thoughts on the UK's market space in 2018? Leave your thoughts and comments below.
