Greater Manchester's new cycling and walking route

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News , Outdoor News

Greater Manchester plans to deliver a £1.5bn cycle network, claimed to be the largest cycling network in the UK.

It was proposed by the Manchester City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). This cycle network will cover 1,000 miles of routes and 75 miles of segregated bike lanes. The programme in place is targeting at least one protected cycle area per local authority in Greater Manchester.

Angeliki Stogia, Manchester City Council's executive member for the environment, planning and transport, said: "we are excited to have Chris Boardman's input on creating world-class walking and cycling infrastructure in Manchester."

Greater Manchester's vision for the future and possibly by 2023 is to create a new network of high-quality, safe cycling routes across the city for the people. This joint partnership with the TfGM is part of a larger project with aims to improve local air quality, reduce traffic congestion and encourage more active travel choices.

Why is a cycling network the way forward in Greater Manchester?

In the Netherlands, more than half of all children cycle to school every day while in Greater Manchester around 250m car journeys are made for a distance less than 1km for school runs.

Many areas within Greater Manchester have pollution levels about the EU legal limits and have contributed to health problems.

The Mayor made no apology for the bold project explaining that decisive action is needed to cut congestion and clean up our air.

"I want to make Greater Manchester one of the top ten places in the world to live and it is action of this sort which will help to deliver that promise."
