Sports retail boosted by London Marathon

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News , Outdoor News

New figures have shown that the UK's sporting retailers are set to see a boost in sales as a result of the weekend's London Marathon.

Shopping site VoucherCodes.co.uk said it has seen searches for running gear jump by 259% in the past week as the event inspired people to get their running shoes on.

In addition, the company's data from last year shows that stores can expect to see the boost in custom continue over the coming days; the fortnight following last year's marathon saw sports searches surge by another 100% versus the week prior to the event.

Claire Davenport, managing director of VoucherCodes.co.uk, said: "We usually notice a spike in interest for offers on running equipment around events like the marathon as inspired Brits look to grab their gear at a discount. Looking back to last year's site data, there's good news for retailers as the effects of the event should carry through for the next couple of weeks.

"With exciting events such as the Tour de France, Wimbledon and the rugby World Cup just around the corner, this week should mark the start of a thrilling summer of sport for Britain and an opportunity for our sports retail industry to benefit from enthused shoppers."
