Online sales to propel global camping tent market, says Technavio

Posted on in Outdoor News

According to the latest research report released by Technavio, the global camping tent market will likely reach close to $2.16 billion by 2020 thanks largely to online sales.

"The rise in online retailing is significantly impacting sales of camping tents, and this trend is likely to help the leading players increase their global footprint over the next four years" said Abhay Sinha, one of Technavio's lead industry analysts for retail goods and services.

According to the report, the global sales growth can be attributed to increased participation in outdoor recreational activities, government initiatives promoting outdoor activities and frequent replacement of old equipment.

Increased participation in outdoor recreational activities

The number of overnight stays in various tourist accommodations is an important indicator to gauge the growth of the camping sector. In 2013, tourists were estimated to have spent 2.64 billion nights in various tourist accommodations in the EU countries - up 2.4% compared to 2012.

Government initiatives

Government initiatives undertaken in various countries to promote camping is likely to boost the growth of the market during the forecast period. The Parks for People Caravan and Camping initiative, a government initiative in Western Australia, works to improve and expand camping experiences in national parks and conservation reserves throughout the region. In India, the Indian Ministry of Tourism is working with the Indian Mountaineering Federation and Adventure Tour Operators Association to position India as an adventure tourism destination.

Frequent replacement of old equipment

Camping equipment usually lasts for one to four years, after which replacement is preferred over repair, due to excessive wear and tear. Tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and air beds are considered to be some of the most important camping equipment. In the UK, average weekly expenditure on camping, sports, and open-air recreational activities in 2013 was the highest among people aged 30-49 years. People in this age bracket spent an average of $2.19 per week on equipment for camping, sport, and open-air recreation in 2013.
