Government confirms e-scooters will be legalised in 2021

Work has now commenced on drafting legislation to legalise e-scooters, which will be in place in 2021.
Eamon Ryan, the transport minister, confirmed that e-scooters will be legalised next year without localised trials.
It is currently illegal for electric scooters to be used on public roads. E-scooters count as mechanically propelled vehicles which must be taxed, insured and driven only with a licence. However, it is not possible to get a licence, tax or insure them, effectively making them unlawful.
In August last year, a report commissioned by the Road Safety Authority concluded that e-scooters should be legalised.
More details about the legislation will follow. Read the ACT's stance on e-scooters, including safety and the implications they have for IBDs, here.
