How to get involved with Local Bike Shop Day 2020

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News

Organisers urge cycle shops to promote their involvement with Local Bike Shop Day to increase the cumulative impact.

The Association of Cycle Traders has launched a package of ideas to help independent cycle shops make the most of this year's Local Bike Shop Day on Saturday September 5th.

The ideas, which can be found on the Local Bike Shop Day website here, include downloading the Local Bike Shop Day logo and sharing it online, on social media and as a poster in shop windows. Shops are being urged to consider doing something special for Local Bike Shop Day from a special offer or promotion to an event that will bring people into their shop, particularly those who may not have visited before.

"This is the one day a year when independent bike shops across the UK can come together to celebrate their distinctive culture," explains Jonathan Harrison, Marketing Director at the ACT.

"It's the day for bike shops to showcase and promote the passion, knowledge and personalised service they offer to their local communities. It is an event that enables individual shops to be part of something bigger than themselves and, in so doing, to use Local Bike Shop Day to drive more footfall through their doors and the doors of other independent cycle shops around the country."

Shops are being asked to particularly focus on Back To School cycling as one of this year's main themes. Government statistics suggest just under 3% of 5-16 year-olds cycle to and from school which, given the drive towards both healthier living and more environmentally friendly forms of transport, provides enormous scope to grow the youth cycling market. Compare this with the Netherlands where two-thirds of children under the age of 12 walk or cycle to school and 75% of secondary school children cycle to school. Independent bike shops are perfectly placed to provide advice to parents on how their children can cycle safely on their return to school in September.

With this in mind, shops are being urged to use the time leading up to September 5th to associate their shop with Local Bike Shop Day and to promote any special offers. The earlier you start promoting, Harrison says, the more impact it is likely to have.

"Make Local Bike Shop Day a celebration of your business as well as a celebration of cycling - email your customer database, let them know now that it's happening so that you build up towards it and invite them to pop in on the day to take a look at something new you have in store."
