Consumers value mechanics qualifications over lower prices

Posted on in Cycles News

Majority of consumers said qualifications were ‘very important' when seeking a bike mechanic.

Visitors to the London Bike Show in February were invited to take part in a survey on the Cytech stand in a bid to collect data about their views on bike maintenance and repair. Their responses shed some light on what is important to consumers when it comes to looking after their bike.

When asked about the most important things they look for in a mechanic, 49% of respondents said that finding a qualified mechanic was ‘very important', whilst just 36% said the same about price. Other factors including ‘location' and ‘availability' were considered to be ‘very important' by 42% and 44% of people respectively.

In addition to this, the survey also asked about how cyclists would go about finding a mechanic, with 30% saying they would go to their nearest IBD vs just 5% who said they'd visit a national chain. 13% said they'd start with an internet search, whilst 17% would ask friends for recommendations.

Despite the London Bike Show being a show for cycle enthusiasts, just 36% of those who took part in the survey said they didn't require a mechanic and were comfortable doing servicing and repairs at home. 45% said they would carry out smaller tasks themselves but go to a mechanic for the bigger jobs, whilst the remaining 19% said they would always go to professional for servicing and repairs.
