Scotland to ban single use plastics from June 2022

The Sscotlandcottish Government has laid legislation to introduce a ban on certain single use plastic items from 1st June 2022.

The ban will apply to the following single-use items:

  • plastic cutlery (forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks)
  • plates
  • straws
  • beverage stirrers
  • balloon sticks
  • food containers made of expanded polystyrene
  • cups and other beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene, including their covers and lids.

Specific exemptions will apply to protect the supply of single-use plastic straws for people who require them for medical purposes.

The Scottish Government consulted on the Draft Environmental Protection (Single-use Plastic Products and Oxo-degradable Plastic Products) (Scotland) Regulations 2021 earlier this year.
