Roads were not built for cars

In researching for his new book Roads Were Not Built For Cars, Carlton Reid has come across some interesting research regarding the history of bike shops and the challenges they faced.
According to Reid, bicycle retailers have faced challenges, not to dissimilar to those faced now, for many years.
Sellers of cheap Bicycle Shaped Objects seem to have been a problem, with independent retailers rallying against catalogues, department stores and supermarkets for at least 120 years.
Cycle retailers may be interested to take a look back at these challenges faced by predecessors and take note of how some existing bike shops came through the post-boom depression and continue to trade today as some of the oldest bike shops.

The new book is due to launch in April as a free e-book.
