Strava releases third annual Insights report

Strava has issued its third annual End of Year Insights report that looks at usage for runners and cyclists, globally and in the UK.
Strava users in the UK logged 27.4 million individual bike rides during the year - up from 2015's figure of 23 million - for a combined distance of 800 million km, with men averaging 41km for a ride and women 34km.
Worldwide, 9.6 activities were uploaded to Strava each second of the year, up from 5.3 activities per second in 2015.
In 2015 the average cycling commute recorded in the UK was 15.9 km, however this figure fell to just 13.5km in 2016.
On the first ever Global Cycle to Work Day (10th May) 79,879 Strava cyclists uploaded a commute. Roughly 514 tons of carbon emissions were saved by this number of people not driving to work on just one day. However, the most popular day for commuting was Tuesday 19th July, where 80,862 commutes were recorded over 1.5million kilometres worldwide. The most popular day for a ride was Sunday 8 May when the temperature hit 25°C - 10°C higher than the historical average.
Last year's most popular Strava segment in the UK- Box Hill in Surrey - has lost its crown with two segments in London's Richmond Park topping the list, with nearly 1 million attempts each. All 10 of the most popular segments are in central or south west London or Surrey.
