Torq Zone invest in future of budding bike technicians

Posted on in Cycles News

Torq Zone Academy have offered their support to Songo.info - a South African social development programme that delivers sport and recreational activities to children.

The organisation relies heavily on the support of generous individuals and organisations to continue its work. The support Songo receives allows the organisation to provide not only sporting opportunities but also provide the children in the program with educational support.

Songo currently runs 5 sport programmes for the children in the community including BMX and MTB. Within the program, Sivuyile Kepelele (Svig), who started out as a young rider in the programme back in 2008, is responsible with keeping the bikes in top condition for the children.

Christoph Sauser, world champion mountain biker and co-founder of Songo, recounts: "Svig has been in our programme from the very first year. He quickly became one of our best riders through his dedication and love for the sport having competed in many MTB races including the Absa Cape Epic and several other long stage races. With his passion for riding having been developed, his passion for the bike and equipment grew as well as the desire to share the joy of riding through teaching. Svig has the very important role of bike mechanic and support coach working in the BMX programme together with Darryn Stow. Svig is a quiet worker we all greatly appreciate!"

The bikes used in the programme take a great deal of hammering being ridden daily by a number of boisterous kids.

To help keep the bikes in the best condition, Songo are extremely proud and excited to share the news that Torq Zone Academy has offered their support in providing Svig the opportunity to attend the world class and accredited Cytech technical training for bike technicians. Svig starts his Cytech technical one followed directly with the more advanced Cytech technical two.

Not only has the Torq Zone Academy provided Svig with the opportunity to extend his knowledge and fine tune his skills but their generous support will be extended to other up and coming young bike mechanics coming through the programme.

Torq Zone Academy is South Africa's very first Bicycle Training Centre of Excellence and offers the Cytech technical training exclusively in South Africa. Cytech is owned by the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT) UK which has over the last 25 years offered bicycle mechanic training for over 3000 courses to 6000 students. Torq Zone Academy offers the Cytech home mechanic, technical one, technical two and technical three courses at its site in Centurion, Pretoria.
