Retail sales in December hit worst level since the financial crisis as Black Friday and heavy discounting takes its toll

http://www.actsmart.biz/uploaded_images/news-main-body/christmas-shopping.jpgLike-for-like retail sales fell by 0.4pc last month, the worst performance in December since 2008 as retailer's battled tough trading conditions and the repercussions of offering major discounts on Black Friday in November.

The sales figures, compiled by the British Retail Consortium and KPMG, highlight the fierce competition among retailers in the run-up to Christmas.

In January 2014 ACT asked cycle retailers how their Christmas retail sales compared to 2012 figures, with mixed results. The majority of retailers did report sales growth vs the previous year, with a quarter of respondents stating sales were up 21% or more.

So, how did the cycles market fare this year? Did discounting and heavy competition have an impact on sales in the lead up to Christmas? Let us know by taking part in this month's poll.
