Last chance to appeal business rates and claim a rebate

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News , Creative News, Outdoor News

On the 30th September all businesses with a commercial premises property will be notified of their new rateable value and you will no longer be able to claim a rebate for any overpaid rates for the last few years.

Business rates are the third biggest cost for SMEs after staff and rent, so the Chancellor's announcement of business rate reform in the most recent Budget was good news for smaller firms.

Businesses will receive their new rateable value on 30th September, with the rates coming into force in April 2017. This is the first time the valuations have been amended since 1st April 2010.

The Treasury estimates that around 900,000 SMEs will be paying less in business rates. However, despite the fact that business could benefit from lower rates in the future, many businesses are actually due a rebate for over-paying rates in recent years.

Every ratepayer has the right to challenge their business rates bill at any time between revaluations. There is only one opportunity to do this however so your chances of achieving success through an appeal, and therefore saving money, are improved if you get advice from professional, accredited surveyors.

Failure to challenge your current rates by the next revaluation on 30th September will mean you lose your right to claim any overpaid rates over the last few years.

ActSmart have partnered with RatesRecovery a leading business rates appeal company, to help businesses determine whether they are due a refund and help them to claim this back.

ActSmart subscribers have already started to receive thousands of pounds in rebates, simply by uploading their rates bill.

"Last year on the recommendation of the ActSmart we accepted an offer from RatesRecovery to review are current status with Manchester City Council.

"We were very pleased with the overall result saving over £3000. They managed to get the rebate back dated five years.

"Mr O‘Neill and his team were prompt, professional and very successful in securing us a rebate. We have, over numerous years, been approached by company's offering a similar service but to no avail.

"In this economic climate when every penny matters, I would strongly recommend their services."
Sean McAdam (Manager Ken Fosters Cycles, Manchester)
